Simply Soaps Review

In an age where we have sooOoo many options for skincare on the market, I think it's really fun to discover smaller indie brands and support small businesses. A lot of the time the owners and employees of smaller brands have a huge wealth of knowledge about the ingredients that they put into their products. For this reason, when I heard about the brand Simply Soaps, I was intrigued to give some of their products a go.

I've been testing their Rosa Passionata Nourishing Facial Serum, and their Geranium Rose Balancing Handmade Soap, and I'm here to tell you my thoughts on the two.

For full disclosure, these two products were sent to me so that I could review them :-)

Starting with their Geranium Rose Balancing Handmade Soap - this is a lovely nourishing bar of soap! I love the scent, it lathers well and it leaves the skin nourished and clean. Aka, everything you could want from a soap. Nice.

Their Rosa Passionata Nourishing Facial Serum, unfortunately, is not for me at all. Firstly, it doesn't really feel like a serum-texture at all, it's more of a facial oil in consistency. This is not a problem in itself, but is something to note. If you want a traditional serum-like product, I don't think this is for you. If you like facial oils, maybe it will be. However...

My main qualm with this is that it smells SO strongly and the smell is truly grim. Now let me just preface this with a disclaimer that I'm not one to typically be sensitive to scents (other than the fact that fragranced skincare usually irritiates my skin). But boy oh boy, this is one strong smelling product. I'm not sure if it's a certain ingredient in the product that I'm picking up on (I've reached out to the brand to find out but haven't heard anything back as of yet), but it stinks of paint. Or varnish. Something along those lines. Basically, not something you want going anywhere near your skin.

Aside from the smell, I'm sorry to report that it doesn't feel hydrating when applied to the skin - it's almost got a dry texture? I've tried to get use out of it by mixing it into my regular moisturiser (which is currently Sukin's Sensitive Facial Moisturiser), and yet I still don't find it works all that well. In fact, I think I react quite badly to it. It makes me lightheaded to the extent that I feel sick whenever I try to use the moisturiser now :-( I don't know if it's the product being absorbed into my skin that I'm reacting to, or quite what, but I'm actually quite unhappy as I've ruined a perfectly good moisturiser from Sukin because now it reeks of paint :-( Overall: would not recommend AT ALL. Seriously. Don't touch. With a bargepole.

Like I say, the soap is nice. It does everything a soap should do. A soap is a soap at the end of the day, but this one smells good and feels good :-) My only criticism of it is that it comes wrapped in plastic, which contradicts the branding on the package which says it is packaged in recyclable packaging...

So yeah, not overly impressed with this brand and would not particularly recommend :-/ I actually feel so bad giving a bad review to a small business, especially one that took the time to send me a couple of products to review, but honesty is the best policy. I wouldn't want anyone to waste their money on something that I think is a bad product.

Have you tried anything from Simply Soaps? Do you know what the awful paint smell is in the serum? Enlighten me, do.
