They state that all their own brand cosmetic products are - quote - 'made without animal testing'. However, they neglect to state whether their suppliers conduct animal testing on behalf of themselves, or whether the ingredients are subject to testing. As with many brand responses, it's about reading between the lines of the statements they give. It's somewhat of a game but it is not fun.
DO THEY SELL IN CHINA?
They do sell in China, but their beauty range is not yet available there yet. They do have hopes to branch out however, which means that they will most likely be starting to test on animals in order to enter the Chinese market.
IS THE RANGE VEGAN?
Their range is not vegan: some products contain beeswax and animal-derived ingredients. H&M are unable to confirm what derivatives exactly are present due to 'a lack of traceability in the chemical industry' (their words not mine). It really shouldn't be too hard to know what is in your products if you know where you are sourcing your ingredients from, but there you go. They mention that they are 'moving towards' getting 'full traceability' in the 'long term' so that they can provide a full vegan-friendly product list at some stage in the future. They also do not list the ingredients of their beauty products online. It's not looking great.
So there you go. It's a real shame - as much as I've enjoyed delving into the world of H&M beauty, I'll be steering clear from now on until I can get a clear and concise confirmation that they are vegan friendly and cruelty-free.
I have a lovely chocolate brown eye pencil from there that I will struggle to replace once it has finished. I wish these companies would just stop the unnecessary cruelty. I'm even more gutted at the number of on-line makeup gurus that consistently promote products from these dodgy cruel companies with no second thought for abused animals. So sad.
ReplyDeleteEssence makes great eyeliner. Its cruelty free.
